Healing Hands, Resilient Spirit

About the Project
Healing Hands, Resilient Spirit is a past and present diptych depicting an individual who has experienced a stroke, surrounded by the hands of caregivers, loved ones, community members, and their own. The placement and variation of hands represent acts of care, therapy, and support that shape the recovery process.
The work examines the emotional landscape before and after a stroke, acknowledging gratitude for caregivers alongside frustration, loss of autonomy, and the challenges of regaining previously taken-for-granted abilities. At its core, the painting centers on hope and resilience. It honors both the sorrow and the triumph that accompany recovery, while recognizing the perseverance of those who have experienced stroke and the ongoing commitment of their support networks.

Behind the work
The project developed through collaboration between artistic expression and research in stroke rehabilitation. Discussions around recovery, therapy, and lived experience informed the composition and symbolism of the work. The diptych format allowed the artist to explore contrast and continuity, while layered gestures and repeated forms reflected the ongoing nature of healing. The process focused on translating clinical understanding and personal experience into a visual language that remains grounded and reflective.
