About the project
The "Circulation" wall installation is a collaborative project resulting from the unique "Artist + Researcher (ARx1)" program, an initiative to bridge the gap between creative arts and scientific inquiry at the Phoenix Bioscience Core. This program pairs local artists with scientific researchers to foster a cross-disciplinary dialogue, translating complex biomedical concepts into accessible, visually engaging public art. The goal of the collaboration between artist Danielle Wood and Dr. Michael Murray, a researcher focused on cardiac health, is to explore the concept of "circulation" from both a technological and biological perspective, making the vital work of the research campus tangible to the public and highlighting the intersection of human creativity and scientific advancement.

Medium: Wood, Acrylic mirror, Argon Filled Glass, Hardware
Retail cost: $8,500
Behind the work
The artwork is a striking wall installation featuring numerous sculpted replicas of cardiac assist devices and artificial hearts. By presenting these life-saving medical devices as a unified artistic display, the installation creates a powerful visual metaphor for the essential, continuous process of circulation, both within the human body and as a flow of innovation within a bioscience research environment. The arrangement of the forms emphasizes movement and flow, transforming objects of critical medical engineering into elements of aesthetic contemplation. This artistic representation invites viewers to reflect on the complexity of the cardiovascular system and the technological advancements designed to sustain it.
